Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players can get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same concept in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complex initially, following a few hands you will be able to get the base subtleties of play with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have several individuals shooting for the high, as well as many trying for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
