Omaha Hi Low: General Overview

by Moises on Mar.13, 2026, under Omaha

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in nearly all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting collection of betting options and because you have many players shooting for the high, and a few battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi lo.
